The maps and tables here show the spatial composition of Columbia County’s railroads, newspapers, post offices, libraries, and churches throughout the 19th century. Each page presents an argument about the spatial history of the county during this time, in light of its focal public institution, in the form of a visualization and accompanying annotation. Readers may interact with each map and annotation by navigating to sub-pages listed on the drop-down menu under “Maps and Tables,” or by clicking through the links below. The maps for each page are embedded directly into the site, though users may also click on the text at the top of each annotation to view a larger version of the map hosted by Carto, the mapping tool used throughout the project.
